Our Story

The College Principal Prof. Dipiloane Phutsisi conceived the visionary idea of creating an Artisan Academy, driven by the objective of expediting the growth and delivery of skilled artisans, aligning seamlessly with the ambitious targets outlined in the National Skills Development Strategy (NSDS) to produce a commendable 30,000 artisans by the year 2030. This innovative initiative represents a significant stride towards meeting the evolving demands of the workforce and empowering individuals with valuable vocational skills.

Situated in close proximity to the South Campus of the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, the Artisan Academy stands as a beacon of educational excellence, strategically positioned to bridge the gap in artisanal development. Commencing operations in April 2023, the Academy is poised to offer a comprehensive array of 12 occupational trades and qualifications, catering to the diverse needs of aspiring artisans and contributing substantially to the fulfillment of the NSDS objectives.

Beyond its commitment to artisanal development, the Academy also plays a pivotal role in advancing the implementation of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). In collaboration with the MICT SETA, the institution will establish an ICT Centre of Excellence, fostering the integration of cutting-edge technologies into the curriculum. This forward-thinking approach not only equips students with traditional artisanal skills but also ensures they are well-versed in the latest technological advancements, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of the digital era.

In essence, the Artisan Academy, under the leadership of Principal Prof. Dipiloane Phutsisi, emerges as a cornerstone for educational innovation and socio-economic progress, shaping the future of artisanal development and contributing to the broader landscape of skills enhancement in South Africa.
